No. You'll only need to configure your modem if it has not previously been configured for your computer. A modem that you have been using has most likely already been configured.

What are 56K modems and do they really deliver?
Over the last year, technology companies have designed modems which allow connections at download speeds approaching 56Kbps. While it's clear that these modems are faster than the 28.8Kbps standard, exactly how much faster is a controversial issue. Upload speeds, for example, continue to be limited to 33.6Kbps (primarily an issue for users who send large files to other people). And the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has capped the maximum download speed for this type of data transmission at 53K bps.
But laboratory-perfect conditions are necessary to reach download speeds approaching even 53Kbps; in fact, many users report speeds in the 40-45Kbps range or lower. Although these speeds fall short of the 56Kbps originally promised by this technology, the y remain substantially faster than the current dial-up standard of 28.8Kbps. So although 56K is not a guaranteed connection rate, this technology still offers a substantial time savings for many users.

NOTE: Although clearcall.net has taken every possible step to provide you with the fastest and most reliable 56K connections, we do not guarantee the speed of your 56K connection.

Are 56K modems all the same?
Initially there were two competing and incompatible standards for 56K modems: K56flex and x2. K56flex modems use a technology supported by companies like Rockwell and Lucent; x2 modems are designed and sold by 3Com (formerly U.S. Robotics) and a few other modem manufacturers. Unfortunately, connection speeds with these modems only approach 56Kbps if you connect to an ISP which supports the same standard as the modem.

However, the recent release of a new standard, V.90, solves this problem. Original 56K modems can upgrade to this standard, if the manufacturer of the modem provides the necessary software. (Please scroll down for more info).

What is V.90?
The International Telecommunications Union recently released an official standard for 56K called V.90 that uses elements from both the K56flex and x2 technologies. This ended the battle between the two incompatible standards.

clearcall.net now provides full support for the V.90 standard.

Return to FAQ Index

Can I use my 56k modem with clearcall.net's V.90 compatible network?
Only if your 56K modem conforms to the new V.90 standard. Please check with your modem manufacturer to determine whether or not your current modem is V.90 compatible and if not, whether a software upgrade to the V.90 standard is available. If not, and y our modem is not x2 compatible, you will need to purchase a new modem to approach 56k speeds. If you need help finding a quality modem at a decent price, email us and we'll point you in the right direction.

What options are there for higher-speed access to clearcall.net besides 56K?
For those who want even faster download speeds, clearcall.net's ISDN service may be the perfect solution. ISDN is a reliable, proven technology that delivers speeds up to 128Kbps, depending on the package you choose.

Does clearcall.net support ISDN access?
